UK Student Films FAQs

1. How do I submit a film to UK Student Films?

The best way to submit a film to UKSF is via a miniDV cassette tape, however if your film is short enough you can place the avi's onto a data DVD. Simply complete the Release Form* and send it with your film to the address at the bottom of the application form.

2. How long will it take for my film to appear on the site?

Once we have received your film through the post it should only take 5 working days for your film to be placed online. This is due to various factors including pulling off images for use on the site, encoding, uploading and entering your details from the Release Form onto the database.

3. Does it cost anything to submit a film to UK Student Films?

NO! Submitting a film to UK Student Films is FREE, but you must complete the Release Form for each film to help us place your film online.

4. Do I have to be a student to submit a film to the site?

Originally Yes. You had to either be attending College or University (or equivalent) or alternatively the film(s) you submit must have been made during that time. However, due to the popularity of UKSF, it is now open to anyone who has made an independent film. Student or not.

5. How old must I be to submit a film to UK Student Films?

There are no age restrictions on submitting films to UK Student Films.

6. Can I submit a film over the web/internet

Unfortunately not at this time. There are two main reasons for this. Firsty the films need to be in the highest quality possible, which often means films are hundreds/thousands of MBs in size - internet submission is therefore not viable at this time.

The second reason is to prevent the un restricted uploading of “lower quality” content such as mobile phone clips and or other material not deemed appropriate for this site. UK Student Films strive to showcase the best independent film and television being made by students and young people today, to be a true online promoter and not just another online video dump.

Films must be submitted by post on one of the stated physical media.

7. What is the postal address to send in my films?

The address to send your films to is as follows:
Film Submissions
UK Student Films
23 Watersplash Court
Thamesdale
London Colney
Hertfordshire AL2 1TN England

8. Will my film be accepted?

Yes. As long as all the criteria are fullfilled (media formats, crip film with no errors etc).

Your film(s) will not be accepted if they are of poor quality causing problems when digitizing, compiling or compressing. No pornographic, ratial or abusive material is accepted and future films sent by you will be automatically rejected.

9. Is there a maximum and minimum size my film has to be?

Not really however we do ask that your film resides around the 30 minutes mark, but longer films will be accepted on merit.

10. What are the technical requirements of my submission?

~The preferred and suggested medium for submission is either MiniDV tape or DVD (MPEG 2). VHS cassettes are not accepted. Data DVD submissions are fine as long as the files are in the following format:

  • .avi
  • .mpg (MPEG 2)
  • .mpeg (MPEG 2)
Other fomats may result in reduced quality or processing issues and as a result may not be used.

~The audio level must be at a fair level with no clipping or distortion. Try to avoid hissing and bottoming out.

~The video signal must be clean and crisp with no generation loss. There must be at least a minute of pre-roll before each film. This is for the digitising process.

The Higher the quality the better it will look on the internet.

11. Can I put more than one film on a DV tape/DVD?

Yes. But follow the rules above concerning pre-roll and quality - ensure there is adequate pre-roll between each film.

12. Will tapes used to submit film(s) be returned to me?

No, unfortunately. All media will be kept in case films need to be reencoded later or in case of any other technical difficulties.

13. My film contains material that is Copyrighted. What do I do?

You should obtain all the rights for any music and/or video used in your film that is copyrighted. The best option is to use music that has been composed for you.

UK Student Films assumes that all filmmakers have received permission to use all material within a film and will not be held liable in any instance for any legal action that may occur by posting a film that has copyrighted music or other material that was used without permission.
